Natalie Jeremijenko lecture

OCAD's Faculty of Design presents a talk by designer Natalie Jeremijenko, Director of the xDesign Environmental Health Clinic at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, where she is an assistant professor in Art, and affiliated with the Computer Science Department. She is also a visiting professor at the Royal College of Art in London, England and an artist not-in-residence at the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto, California.

Jeremijenko, whose background includes studies in biochemistry, physics, neuroscience and precision engineering, creates work described as experimental design, as it explores opportunities presented by new technologies for non-violent social change.

Her work has been exhibited at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. A 1999 Rockefeller Fellow, Jeremijenko was recently named one of the 40 most influential designers by I.D. This lecture will be great background for our next assignment, Design for a humanitarian outcome.

Leo Burnett Worldwide

Leo Burnett was a pioneer in American advertising, the use of symbols and identifiers and the use of drama in ads. Not many can be said to have reached his level of creativity and working methods. Leo Burnett worldwide, about 50 years after it first opened, now has branches all across the world and continues to come up with the best in innovative advertising.

The Designers Republic

Founded in 1986, The Designers Republic located their business in Sheffield (UK), proclaiming to be “The Designers Republic Ltd, Sheffield, Soyo, North of Nowhere”. While members come and go, The Designers Republic (TDR for short) has always been led by Ian Anderson. With a background in philosophy and no formal design training, Anderson discovered his interest in design while producing flyers to promote clubs and shows in Sheffield. From there, Anderson landed jobs creating album covers for dance music groups, ultimately becoming the main design agency for the Warp records label in 1994 (Creative Review).

He was born September 8th, 1952 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Carson and his family moved to New York City four years later. Since then he has traveled all around the world but has maintained New York as his base of operations. Carson now owns two studios; one in New York and another in Charleston, South Carolina.

Milton Glaser

Milton Glaser is a graphic designer, best known for the I Love New York logo, "Bob Dylan" poster.

This poster produced for the School of Visual Arts to help improve conditions in Africa and fight world poverty. I like this poster
because it captures what artists do with a few words and what appears to be a simple image. One would think that graphic design would need to be unusual and complex to be considered good but this design demonstrates that it does not. Lots of his artwork grab our attention without being overdone.
